Import component

The import component makes it easy for you to import bulk content into your system.  The component works by enabling you to select an application (where the data will be import data too) and an indicator set (which determines the data model used).  From this selection BetterData then creates a data entry template in Google Drive as a spreadsheet.

The data entry template has column headings for each field in the data model and indicates which fields are mandatory.  You can save the template as an Excel or Open Office file to complete offline.  When you're ready to import the data you have the option of also selecting taxonomies tags to add to the data.

Application

Applications are designed to help manage and monitor your programmes.  Your community can have multiple applications, designed to cover the needs of different programmes in your organisation.  While applications cover your programme indicators, they are focused at the operational or activity level of your programme.  This means that they provide a tool to help both monitor (from the M&E perspective) and manage (from the programme perspective) the programme from start to finish.  Taking this holistic approach integrates indicators and data quality directly into the day to day activities of the team implementing the programme.  It also provides project management tools that are customised for the programme itself.

Community

Community

The community is the shell in which your system grows.  Each community can have one or more apps, each designed to help you manage a specific process.  It also contains any components that you need to use.

Each community has a unique URL, one or more administrators and a set of users that are members of the community.  While user accounts can access more than one community, membership of the community is managed at the community level.

Taxonomy component

The taxonomy component is used to manage pre-defined lists of keywords.  Taxonomies are an important part of your information architecture.  They ensure that different members of your team are cross-referencing data they collect in the same way.  For example, you might create a taxonomy listing a set of age ranges, places or types of stakeholders.  Using taxonomies makes your analysis faster, as your data is already coded.

Indicator set component

Indicator set component

The indicator set component is used to create the data model and view models for any forms needed on your community.  While some systems use the same data model for all forms (hiding and changing the labels for fields), BetterData allows you to create a unique data model for each form that you need.  This gives you more flexibility when it comes to using that data to generate reports.

The data model is determined by the fields that you need on a form.  However, it can also include fields that are calculated, populated by an external application or auto-populated from data elsewhere in the community.  Once configured an indicator set can be used in one or more Apps on your community.  Indicator sets are accessible both via a web browser and on the Android app.

Reports component

Reports component

The reports component is a tool to define and publish new reports on your BetterData community.  Published reports can be displayed on any page of your community.  Reports enabled user to export data from your community into PDF, Excel and other files formats.

This component is similar to a data warehouse, giving you access to any field in any form used on your community.  It also integrates with both the workflow and taxonomies to give you powerful ways of filtering data.
